Program Description: This internship will focus on Arts and Museum Management at the Westchester Children’s Museum through our hands-on approach to STEAM-based Museum Education. The Museum Ed intern will help to facilitate our Educational programs such as our On-Site Field Trips and Big Weekend Events, as well as assist in development and execution of our off-site programs. The Museum Education Intern will work with staff to assist with day to day programs as well as daily functions of the museum. Some of these responsibilities include:
Maintain a clean and safe environment
Promote the Power of Play by directly engaging with children and families to maximize their learning and enjoyment in the Museum
Lead Daily- drop in program, like read-alouds and leading songs, dances for large groups of children and their caretakers. (training will be provided)
Manage activities within assigned exhibit space
Prep materials for exhibits, activities, and Museum workshops
May be scheduled to host or assist the host at birthday parties-check in guests, work behind the scenes to clean and reset the Museum and party room area
Support Field trips at the museum
Assist guests with engagement of Museum exhibits
Prepare materials and run educational programs on different topics including STEAM subjects.
Run programs, tours and drop-in programs to children of all ages, from 18 months -middle school.
Maintain exhibits and gallery spaces during field trips, not limited to organizing and resetting toys, fixing or replacing exhibit parts, cleaning up litter & notifying managers of any missing or broken exhibit pieces
Interact with field trip leaders, reminding them of museum code of conduct policies, and most importantly: (1) All children need to be accompanied by an adult guardian (the museum is not responsible for child supervision), (2) respect the under 3yo Toddler Beach, (3) no running or climbing in the museum galleries
Participate in the development and facilitation of year-round classes, public programs, camps, special events, school workshop programs, field trips, and professional
development opportunities.
Coordinate with the Museum Experience team to develop and deliver meaningful tour content for our current exhibits and run programs on site, ensuring a fun and educational visit for all guests.
Participate with leaders to develop and communicate educational strategies that furthers the vision and mission of WCM.
Represent WCM’s mission and maintain an awareness of current early childhood and elementary education trends through participation in professional organizations.
Report to the Education & Programs Manager, working a part-time schedule set by the E&PM Team to meet the needs of booked programs and planning/training times
Collaborate with Lead STEM Educator, Public Programs Coordinator, and other part time Museum Educator staff
Support Museum Experience Managers, and PlayWorker staff
Works collaboratively and effectively with all WCM staff and volunteers.
Duration/Hours:
Half semester (non-paid credit bearing internship)
Can be completed for 2, 3 or 4 credits
2 credits = 5 hours per week, 3 credits = 7.5 hours per week, 4 credit = 10 hours per week
Has the potential to be promoted to paid part-time position
Role may be adjusted to suit the skills from their Educational Programs and Major
Must have reliable transportation to Rye from Purchase College
